The Big Mac Burger Bowl That’s Actually Good for You 🍔

Let’s be honest… sometimes you just want a Big Mac. That salty, saucy, cheesy combination that just hits after a long week. And look, there’s absolutely a time and place for one — I’m not here to take that away from you. But I wouldn’t exactly be recommending it as an everyday meal either.

So I did what any dietitian obsessed with making healthy eating actually enjoyable would do… I turned it into a bowl. One that gives you everything you love about a Big Mac, just a little more nutritious than the OG.

The Big Mac Burger Bowl has quickly become one of the most-loved recipes inside the Julzhealth Recipe Hub, and honestly? It makes complete sense. The juicy beef patty, that iconic special sauce, melted cheese, pickles, chips — it’s all there. Just built into a balanced, macro-friendly meal that you’ll actually look forward to eating.

One of my clients, Priscilla, made it twice in one week. Twice. I think that says it all.

The Nutrition Behind This Recipe

  • The Big Mac sauce gets a makeover. Swapping full-fat mayo for a combination of 97% fat free mayo and Greek yoghurt keeps that creamy, tangy flavour while making it a whole lot more calorie friendly.
  • Extra lean beef mince: is high in protein to keep you full and support muscle, while being significantly lower in saturated fat than regular mince — a simple swap that makes this a much more heart-friendly choice without compromising on flavour.
  • Spud Lite potatoes means more bang for buck. Naturally lower in carbohydrates than regular potatoes, meaning you get to eat more chips for the same carb and calorie amount. Bigger portions, yes please.
  • Turning the Big Mac into a bowl means you’re effortlessly packing in more vegetables. More veg means more fibre, and more fibre means a happier gut and a fuller stomach.

The Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • Patty
  • 500g Extra Lean Beef Mince
  • 1 large Egg
  • 20g White Flour
  • 4 slices Bega Protein Tasty Cheese Slices
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray

Big Mac Sauce

  • 100g Praise 97% Fat Free Mayonnaise
  • 60g Burger Pickles, diced
  • 12g Yellow Mustard
  • 32g Mingle Tomato Sauce
  • 40g Chobani Natural Light Greek Yogurt

Bowl

  • 800g Spud Lite Potatoes
  • 15ml Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 4 cups Lettuce (shredded)
  • 120g Tomatoes
  • 60g Burger Pickles

Method

  1. Slice the potato (skin on) into thin strips, then pat dry thoroughly. Toss with 15g olive oil and salt. Air-fry or oven bake at 180°C for 40-50 minutes (shaking at 20 minutes).
  2. Combine the mince, flour, salt & pepper and egg in a bowl and mix well with your hands (a longer mix helps tenderise). Shape into 4 patties. Pan-fry in extra-virgin olive oil. If you like melted cheese, place a slice on each patty at the end.
  3. Mix mayo, tomato sauce, mustard, half of the pickles (diced) and yoghurt together.
  4. Assemble bowl with lettuce, patty, chips, tomato, avocado and drizzle with big mac sauce.

Tips to Make It Even Better

Pat your potatoes really dry before air frying — moisture is the enemy of a crispy chip

Don’t rush the mix on your patties — a good 2–3 minute mix makes a noticeably more tender patty

Make extra sauce — it keeps in the fridge for a few days and works on everything

Meal prep friendly — cook your patties and chips in bulk and store separately in the fridge. When you’re ready to eat, pop the chips back in the air fryer to crisp back up and reheat the patty, then assemble fresh. Taking it to work? Pack the bowl ingredients in one container but when microwaving, remove the fresh veggies and add them after reheating.

The Bigger Picture

This is exactly what eating well should look like. Not sad salads, not flavourless “clean” food, not white-knuckling your way through the week hoping you don’t cave and order UberEats.

It’s food you actually want to eat. Food that works with your goals, not against them. Food your family will ask for again — kids included (my nutrition clients have confirmed it’s kid approved 🙌).

This is the whole idea behind the Julzhealth Recipe Hub — a growing library of dietitian-created recipes that are balanced, practical, and genuinely delicious. No overthinking, no restriction, no spending hours in the kitchen.

Just good food that fits your real life.
